TWENTY-TWO

HAVING BEEN INDOORS for over a week, the sudden change of light on their exit was jarring. Still locked in the adjustment, Roxie didn’t notice anyone was around until a cacophony of voices rose. Her name. They were calling her name. Who? Why? A blow of shock tried to stop her feet, but Ballard tugged hard. Someone was behind her, Zairn, his body was literally against her back, propelling her forward.

People. There were people all around. Behind metal barriers that had been set up on either side of their straight path, but why?

Ballard stepped aside and Zairn kept on going. The former pushed her head down. The latter fed her into the car she hadn’t noticed waiting for them.

Stunned, Roxie fought with the hood. Escapee sections of hair were getting in her way. She’d just managed to loosen it and toss her hair back when she was jerked again, this time by the car moving forward.

Taking stock, Ogilvie and Astrid were seated facing her and Zairn. Damnit. Zairn.

Unsure if she should scream or laugh, exasperation reigned. “What the hell is going on?” she exclaimed.

The black screen behind Astrid and Ogilvie’s heads descended to reveal Tibbs was up front, next to Ballard in the driving seat.

“Did I win the lottery?” Roxie asked, expecting someone to fill her in.

“Some would say,” Zairn said.

Astounding. Jokes? After what they’d just been through? “Z!”

“We’ll be in the air in little more than half an hour.”

“I don’t care,” Roxie said, pouncing to the edge of the seat, adjusting her angle to face him. “Tell me what is going on!”

He cleared his throat; there was something about the twist of his lips that she couldn’t figure out. “It was broadcast.”

That didn’t help. “I don’t understand.”

“It’s everywhere. Everyone’s seen it,” Astrid said. “You went viral.”

Sucking in a breath, she released it in one, dropping her hands in her lap. “Still no idea what you’re talking about.”

“The day I put you in bed,” Zairn said, looking straight ahead. “When I called the doctor.”

Broadcast. Viral. Wait, they were... Did that suggest...? Shit! How? It couldn’t be. No way. No goddamn way.

Replaying it, she went step by step. “I... I left Hatfield in the hallway... I sassed you...” A side-nod. “Interrupted you... went into the bedroom and...” She shook her head, recalling sitting at the laptop next to the door. Yes, the camera angle took in most of the room, but nothing to fucking hide was the damn point. Nothing to hide! Did it have to bite her on the goddamn ass? Why her? “I didn’t hit the stream button.”

“Evidently, you did,” Zairn said. “It’s on screens across the world.”

“Oh, God,” Roxie groaned, her fingers disappearing beneath her long bangs to cradle her forehead. She slid back in her seat, curling forward into the brace position. “Oh, God, this is awful.” Hope, no doubt misplaced, struck her. “What did we do?” Springing up, she grabbed Zairn’s forearm in both hands. “It wasn’t that bad, was it?” Memories were fuzzy. Her voice deepened and volume dropped.
